Need Help choosing |
At softbots we try and keep things as simple as possible! that also
includes choosing the type of real nappy that is best for you and your
baby! The reason there's such a big choice of nappies is because not
every parent and baby are the same and will all have different reasons
for using real nappies and different factors to consider. Don’t let all
the choice put you off it really is simple, “we promise”. The nappies we stock have been tried and tested on many parents &
babies, ( including my four ) and have most probably been made and
designed by parents themselves. There are three main types of nappies available ( two part ( fitted ) / pocket nappy & the all in one. See the types of nappies page and you can read in more detail about each nappy we stock.
Consider the below points when choosing !
Cost Even
if you choose the most expensive type of real nappy you will still
spend less than you would if you used disposable nappies. Although the
money you spend on real nappies will be more noticeable as you buy them
upfront rather than spread out over the weeks / mths / years. It
will cost between £700 – over £1000 for disposable nappies for one baby
for 2.5 years, plus there’s the cost of disposable wipes this could add
another £200 - £300 pounds, taking the total cost to well over £1000 . These figures are based on nappy changing from
birth – potty! To kit you out using real nappies full time you would
need approx 15 - 20 nappies ( give or take ) and would cost from £140… Just think the £100’s of pounds you are saving could be spend on other things for your child, or just help lower your weekly supermarket spend. How easy to use Once you get the hang of using real nappies they are all very easy to use. pocket nappies are probably the quickest and easiest, as there is only one part
to put on. Shaped nappies are also easy and although there’s two parts
plus a liner there still very easy once you have done a couple of changes. Terry squares & pre folds (the cheapest option) are the
most fiddly to use, they require folding and fixing in place although nappi nippas make this easier than the old fashioned pins, but again the more you do it the better it gets and becomes second nature.
Care and washing (Keep it easy)
Using a real nappies on one baby will only need to do an extra washing
load every 2-3 days. There’s no soaking involved any more, as your
washing machine will do all the hard work for you all you. Real
nappies are easy to care for. With wet nappies simply separate the
parts of the nappy and put into your wet bag / bucket ( dry no soaking) With soiled nappies
drop the loose solids off the nappy into the toilet (made easier if you
use a flushable liner or a stretchy fleece liner), rinse the worst of
the mess off and put into your nappy bucket/ wet bag.... See care and washing info
How easy to dry ! Although
you can tumble most real nappies & wraps ( See care and washing
info ) it is always best to hand dry as much as you can as this will
extend the life of the nappy & wrap and is far better for our
environment! Line drying also makes the nappies feel fresher. If the weather’s not to good you can hang-dry somewhere warm, with good air circulation, Some
nappies dry quicker than others, look at how much the nappy unfolds to
how quick it will dry.Terry squares and prefolds are the fastest to
dry as they open out fully. So if drying is an issue think about it
before you make your choice.
Absorbency and bulk Any real nappy will look more bulky than a disposable nappy, Fact ! As
disposables contain gel that expands as it gets wet. Although a Real
nappy is more bulky your baby will not have any discomfort from wearing
and there are no known health problems linked. The more absorbent
you need your real nappy to be the more bulky it gets, although some
fibres are very absorbent yet slimmer looking like micro terry & Bamboozle by Tots Bots. Pocket nappies are a slim fitting option and
the absorbency can be altered to suit your baby needs, both shaped and pocket nappies you
can use them un-boosted (slimmer) for playtimes (daytime), and use
boosters to maximise their absorbency for other times, night-time, long
journeys or for a heavy wetter. You will soon know your babies needs
both day and night.
What next ! If
you are still not sure why not go for a real nappy trial Bucket, Buying
or trying a few will cost you very little and will make it much easier
in choosing what suits your family best. This will be through leicestershire county council contact us for an application form. Remember you may also to able to claim £30 cash back( contact your council for more info )
